Bethany City Church in Sunderland has marked its 20th anniversary, celebrating community service, spiritual and personal growth.

Over the past two decades, the charity has played a crucial role in transforming lives in the area through initiatives such as food banks, addiction support, and youth program.

The church began with 70 pioneers, and now records approximately 200 attendees, including guests and members. For Bethany, the anniversary marks not just a celebration, but a chance to bring people together and strengthen connections.

Geoff Forster, one of Bethany City’s leaders said: "It’s been incredible to witness how far we’ve come. We started as a small congregation, but now we’ve impacted hundreds of lives in Sunderland, particularly through our food bank, which has supported countless families."

Mr. Forster noted how Bethany became his sanctuary, giving him personal strength and the opportunity to help others rebuild their lives.

“One of the Church's key ministries is based on the gospel of St. Matthew, focusing on providing food to those in need. Through food, we've not only fed the hungry but also provided spiritual nourishment and encounters with God."

He said the charity is focused on supporting people struggling with addiction, homelessness, and poverty by offering food, clothing, and sleeping bags.

The 64-years-old elder further emphasised the significance of community in Christianity: "We were created for community. Working together, loving each other, and treating everyone equally is what makes Bethany special."

He expressed how fulfilling it has been to see lives transformed by the Church's mission to be a beacon of hope in the city.

Margaret Hall, who has been a member and partner at Bethany since its inception said she found deep sense of belonging within the community.

"I have seen people walk through our doors lost and leave with hope. Bethany isn't just a place to worship, it is a family.”

The 82-year-old said the church has challenged her in unexpected ways.

"The presentation today, for example, is something I never thought I could ever do. I still do not find it easy, but I know I have to do it, because it is a blessing.

"Working at the Church’s outreach, like the Soul Church, has been my highlight. My advice to those without a community is to find a place like Bethany—it’s life-changing."

For Margaret Naetham, long-standing partner of Bethany City Church for twenty years, the Church has been a cornerstone of her spiritual journey.

“My first encounter was at the Stadium of Light, and it was amazing. I knew this was the place to be.”

Ms. Naetham emphasised how service has been central to her experience, stating: “From working with toddlers to the lunch club and Soul Kitchen, I've become deeply involved in outreach.”

The 77-year-old noted, “The church's programs, especially Soup Kitchen, has made a real difference.”

Margaret encouraged people feeling to show up, and there will be someone to speak to.

“Being part of something bigger can bring healing and purpose,” she added.

27-year-old Isaac Grayson said: “I have been visiting Bethany City on and off for three years, and even people around me can tell the difference. My life has been transformed in ways I can not explain, but I know it in my heart.

"I was going through a rough patch early 2023, and Bethany was my lifeline. The warmth, the support I received gave me hope when I had none.

“In my quest for answers, I have visited a few places but none gave me peace of mind like I have it here. I mean, I do not have all the answers I seek yet, but I am willing to take each day as it comes till I find answers no matter how long it takes me here.”

Gaynor Callum, 28, shared how Bethany City has deeply impacted her life, saying: “It’s the only place where I feel like people truly care, not just for filling seats. When someone smiles here, you know it's genuine, and that’s rare in this world.”

"Before coming to Bethany, I struggled with feelings of isolation. But these last few weeks has been a transformative experience."

The 28- year-old said every Sunday service feels like a fresh start, helping her face the week ahead with renewed hope.
